The national flag of Greece features nine horizontal blue and white stripes with a white cross on a blue canton at the hoist.
The flag of Greece was adopted during the War of Independence in 1822 and later standardized in its current form by law in 1978. Its blue and white colors are commonly associated with the sea and sky of Greece, the white cross represents the Greek Orthodox faith, and the nine stripes are traditionally linked to the nine syllables of the motto “Freedom or Death,” with another tradition connecting them to the nine Muses. The design has roots in proposals made by Rigas Feraios in 1797 and passed through several monarchic and republican variations before the modern version was fixed.
