The flag of Madagascar features a vertical white band at the hoist and two horizontal bands of red over green on the fly side.
Madagascar adopted this flag on 21 October 1958 after its selection by a technical commission on 15 October 1958. Designed by Andrianome Ranaivosoa, it became the national flag shortly after the Malagasy Republic became autonomous and remained in use through independence in 1960 to the present. The white band represents purity and peace, the red symbolizes sovereignty and the historic royal authority of the Merina kingdom, and the green stands for the coastal regions, hope, and the Hova peasant class associated with the independence movement.
