The flag of Benin features a vertical green band at the hoist and two horizontal bands on the fly, yellow above red.
The current design was adopted on 16 November 1959 for the Republic of Dahomey and was restored on 1 August 1990 after the end of the People’s Republic of Benin period. The colors are associated with Pan-African symbolism: green for agricultural hope and the fertile south, yellow for the northern savannas, wealth, and sunny climate, and red for the courage of ancestors and blood shed in the struggle for freedom.
