The flag of Bulgaria is a horizontal tricolor of white, green, and red.
Bulgaria’s national flag is a horizontal white-green-red tricolour in a 3:5 proportion. It was first adopted in 1879 following the Russo-Turkish War that secured Bulgaria’s de facto independence, and it was re-established after the fall of communism on 27 November 1990, later confirmed by the 1991 Constitution and a 1998 law. The color scheme was influenced by the Russian white-blue-red tricolour, with green replacing blue. According to the cited sources, white symbolizes peace, freedom, and spiritual aspiration, green represents fertile land, agricultural wealth, and nature, and red stands for courage, bravery, and the struggle for independence. During the communist period, the flag included a state emblem before reverting to the plain tricolour.
