The Hungarian tricolor uses red, white, and green drawn from the historic national coat of arms. These colors were introduced as a revolutionary banner during the 1848–49 revolts and became the official national flag after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918. The plain tricolor has remained the country’s basic national flag, while versions bearing the coat of arms have also been used for state purposes. The colors are traditionally associated with strength or courage, faithfulness or purity, and hope or the fertile land of Hungary.
