The flag of Poland is a white-over-red horizontal bicolour formally adopted on 1 August 1919 with a 5:8 proportion. Its colours derive from the Polish coat of arms, which features a white eagle on a red shield and is attested from the 13th century. White and red entered popular patriotic use in 1792 and became an important national symbol during the 1831 November Uprising. A state version of the flag places the Polish coat of arms in the centre of the white stripe for official diplomatic, military, and other state uses.
