The flag of Togo features five horizontal green and yellow stripes with a red canton bearing a white five-pointed star.
Togo adopted this flag on 27 April 1960, the day it gained independence. It was designed by the artist Paul Ahyi. The design uses the Pan-African colors red, yellow, and green, and the canton-and-star arrangement was inspired by the United States flag. The five stripes are commonly interpreted as representing Togo’s five historic regions. Green represents agriculture, hope, and youth; yellow represents sunshine and mineral wealth; red symbolizes the blood shed for independence; and the white star stands for peace, light, and intelligence.
