The national flag of Chad is a vertical tricolor of deep blue, yellow, and red.
Chad adopted this flag on 6 November 1959 while it was an autonomous republic within the French Community, and it retained the design after full independence on 11 August 1960. The design combines the influence of the French tricolor with Pan-African colors, using blue in place of the more usual green to avoid duplication with neighboring flags. According to the cited sources, blue represents the sky, hope, and water resources, yellow symbolizes the sun and the desert in the north, and red stands for the blood shed for independence as well as national unity and progress.
