Nigeria adopted this flag in 1959, and it was first officially hoisted on 1 October 1960 when the country became independent. The design was created by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi after his entry was selected in a national competition. The green bands symbolize natural wealth and fertile agriculture, while the white band represents peace, unity, and harmony.
