The flag of Puerto Rico features five horizontal red and white stripes with a blue hoist triangle bearing a single white five-pointed star.
Created in December 1895 by the Puerto Rican section of the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York, the flag was designed as an inversion of the Cuban flag’s colors to express solidarity in the struggle for independence. The design is credited to Antonio Vélez Alvarado, with later attribution also given to Francisco Gonzalo Marín. It was officially adopted in 1952 with a darker blue triangle and revised symbolism, and the flag had previously been outlawed under the 1948 Gag Law before display was reinstated in 1957.
