Flag of the Swiss canton of Uri, showing a black bull’s head with a red tongue and red nose ring on a yellow square field.
The flag of Uri is derived directly from the cantonal coat of arms and has been used since at least the early modern period, becoming the standard cantonal flag in the 19th century. Its black and yellow colors reflect the black eagle on a gold field of the Holy Roman Empire. The aurochs head is a historical pun on the name Uri and represents an animal once associated with the region. The red tongue and nose ring were later additions linked to the taming of the animal and to a legendary papal augmentation of honor.
