The flag of Flanders shows a black lion rampant with red claws and tongue on a gold field.
The flag of Flanders is commonly known as the Vlaamse Leeuw, or Flemish Lion. Its lion emblem derives from the historic arms of the Counts of Flanders and has been associated with the region since the 12th century, symbolizing strength, courage, and medieval heritage. The modern flag was officially adopted in 1973 and reaffirmed in 1985; the coat of arms was adopted as an official symbol in 1990.
