History
The flag of Flemish Brabant is based on the historic heraldry of Brabant, using the black lion on a gold field associated with the medieval Duchy of Brabant since the 12th and 13th centuries. It was officially adopted in 1995 after the former province of Brabant was divided into Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant, continuing the traditional Brabant colors and symbolism.
