History
Berlin’s flag uses a red-white-red arrangement linked to the city’s historic ties to Brandenburg. The black bear is Berlin’s heraldic animal and appears on a city seal from 1280. The present civil flag, designed by Ottfried Neubecker, was adopted on 26 May 1954 for West Berlin, with the bear set slightly left of center and facing left. After German reunification in 1990, this version became the official flag of the whole city.
