Flag of the Dutch province of Limburg, featuring white, blue, and yellow horizontal stripes with a red double-tailed lion near the hoist.
The flag of Limburg was officially adopted on 28 July 1958. Its design was created during World War II by the architect Maris and refined after earlier proposals were rejected. The blue stripe symbolizes the Maas River, the yellow stripe recalls the golden age of the historic Duchy of Limburg, and the white stripe represents purity. The red double-tailed lion is derived from the coat of arms of the medieval Duchy of Limburg, documented since 1208, and was given two tails to distinguish it from the lion in the national arms of the Netherlands.
