History
The current flag of Iraq was adopted on 22 January 2008. It uses the Pan-Arab colors red, white, black, and green, a color scheme associated with Arab unity and the heritage of the Arab Revolt. The Arabic takbir, “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Great”), was added to the flag in 1991 and retained in later versions. Earlier versions of the flag displayed three green stars on the white stripe; those stars were removed in the 2008 revision.
