The flag of Bahrain features a red field with a white vertical band at the hoist, divided by a serrated line of five white points.
Bahrain’s flag developed from a plain red banner historically used for centuries. After the 1820 General Treaty of Peace with Britain, a white stripe was added to distinguish it from pirate flags. A serrated white-red boundary was introduced in 1932, first with twenty-eight points, reduced to eight in 1972, and standardized to five in 2002. The five points represent the Five Pillars of Islam; white symbolizes peace, and red represents the blood of martyrs and the battles fought by the nation.
Current five-point design adopted
The serration was reduced to five points, representing the Five Pillars of Islam.
