Historical flag of the United States used from 1896 to 1908, with thirteen red and white horizontal stripes and a blue canton bearing forty-five white stars.
The United States used this forty-five-star flag from 4 July 1896 to 3 July 1908. Its thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies, and the forty-five stars represent the states in the Union after Utah became the forty-fifth state. This was the official national flag during the Spanish-American War and during the administrations of Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt.
