The flag of Malaysia features fourteen horizontal red and white stripes with a dark blue canton bearing a yellow crescent and fourteen-point star.
Malaysia’s national flag is known as Jalur Gemilang, meaning Stripes of Glory. Its fourteen red and white stripes represent the thirteen member states and the federal government. The blue canton carries a yellow crescent symbolizing Islam and a fourteen-pointed star representing the constituent states. Yellow denotes royal sovereignty and Islamic leadership, while red, white, and blue reflect historical Commonwealth ties. The design originated from a 1950 competition won by architect Mohamed Hamzah. It was first hoisted on 26 May 1950 for the Federation of Malaya with eleven stripes and an eleven-pointed star, and was later amended after the formation of Malaysia in 1963 to its present fourteen-stripe, fourteen-point form.
Winning design selected
A public contest selected Mohamed Hamzah’s striped design with a crescent and star as the winning flag proposal.
Federation flag approved
The final Malayan flag was approved on 19 May and first raised on 26 May, with eleven stripes and an eleven-point star.
Current design adopted
The flag was modified to fourteen stripes and a fourteen-point star when Malaysia was formed.
