The flag of Maine is a dark blue field bearing the state coat of arms, including a shield with a moose beneath a pine tree, supporters, a North Star, and the words “Dirigo” and “Maine.”
Maine adopted its current flag in 1909. The design places the state coat of arms on a dark blue field. The coat of arms centers a shield showing a moose resting beneath a white pine tree, flanked by a farmer with a scythe and a seaman leaning on an anchor, symbolizing the state’s historic reliance on agriculture and the sea. A single North Star above the shield represents the state motto, Dirigo, meaning “I Lead.” From 1901 to 1909, Maine used an earlier state flag with a buff field, a green pine tree, and a blue five-pointed North Star in the canton.
