History

New Jersey adopted this state flag in 1896. Its buff field reflects the buff-colored facings used on New Jersey troops' Revolutionary War uniforms. The central coat of arms was designed in 1777 by Pierre Eugène du Simitière and later modified in 1928. The imagery emphasizes self-government, agriculture, liberty, and prosperity.
