The flag of New York is a deep blue field with the state coat of arms centered, including Liberty and Justice, a shield with river and ships, an eagle atop a globe, and the mottos “Excelsior” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
New York’s flag uses the state coat of arms on a blue field in a 1:2 proportion. The coat of arms was first designed in 1777 and formally adopted in 1778. Earlier state flag versions used buff and white fields, but the dark blue field was restored on April 2, 1901. In April 2020, the secondary motto “E Pluribus Unum” was added alongside “Excelsior.”
