A dark blue flag bearing the Kansas state seal in the center with a sunflower above it and no state name below, as used from 1927 to 1961.
Kansas adopted this flag in 1927. It features the state seal at the center and a sunflower above it, with the sunflower representing the state flower. This version did not include the state name; gold block lettering reading “KANSAS” was added beneath the seal in 1961. The design was created by Hazel Avery in 1925 after legislation for an official state flag was championed by Adjutant General Milton R. McLean, and the flag was first publicly displayed at Fort Riley by Governor Benjamin S. Paulen.
