Michigan

Michigan adopted its current state flag on August 1, 1911. Designed by Caroline Campbell, it places the state coat of arms on a dark blue field. The blue field recalls Union regimental blue from the Civil War. The coat of arms includes a rising sun over water and a peninsula, a front-facing figure with a raised hand for peace and a rifle for defense, elk and moose as supporters, and a bald eagle representing the United States. The Latin mottos include “E Pluribus Unum” and “Tuebor.”
