History
The flag of the Brussels-Capital Region is a 2:3 blue field charged with a stylized iris. The iris represents the marsh-iris associated with the wetlands on which Brussels was founded. The emblem was selected through a public design competition and adopted in 1991, after formal approval of the iris symbol in 1990. In 2015 the region introduced the current flag design, updating the earlier gold-iris version with a grey-toned heart while preserving the same iris symbolism. The blue and yellow colors also echo those associated with the European Union.
