The flag of Washington, D.C. displays three red stars above two horizontal red bars on a white field.
The flag of Washington, D.C. is derived from the coat of arms of George Washington. It was first proposed by Charles Dunn in 1924, initially with blue stars, and after review by a congressional flag commission the Washington-arms design was officially adopted on October 23, 1938. The design has been widely praised for its simplicity and strong heraldic character, and it is also observed each year on June 14 as DC Flag Day.
