The flag of Texas features a vertical blue hoist panel with a single white star, alongside horizontal white and red stripes.
Known as the Lone Star Flag, the flag of Texas was first adopted by the Republic of Texas on January 25, 1839, and readopted on August 31, 1933, after a de facto period from 1879 to 1933 when no official flag existed. Its proportions are 2:3. Blue represents loyalty, white purity, and red bravery, while the single white star symbolizes unity, independence, and the spirit of the former republic.
Became the state flag
When Texas joined the United States, the Republic’s national flag became the state flag.
Official status lapsed
The 1879 revision of Texas statutes repealed the flag law, though the Lone Star Flag continued in de facto use.
Official status restored
Texas restored the Lone Star Flag’s official status and enacted a detailed description of its design.
Flag description revised
A new law specified the flag’s proportions, star size and position, and colors.
