The flag of Missouri is a horizontal red, white, and blue tricolor with the state coat of arms centered inside a blue ring of 24 white stars.
Missouri adopted this flag on March 22, 1913. Its design was created by Marie Elizabeth Oliver. The red, white, and blue tricolor honors both the United States and Missouri’s French-Louisiana heritage. The center shows the state coat of arms from the Great Seal, encircled by 24 white stars marking Missouri as the 24th state admitted to the Union. The seal includes two grizzly bears, a crescent moon, a bundle of arrows, a liberty cap, and the motto “Salus populi suprema lex,” and the flag has remained unchanged since adoption.
