This white-over-red design is used by the Austrian states of Tyrol and Upper Austria in plain form. In Tyrol, the color scheme reflects the long-standing red-on-white Tyrolean emblem associated with the region since the medieval County of Tyrol; the modern state flag was formally adopted in 1946. In Upper Austria, the same colors are used with a separate arms-bearing state flag; the flag was introduced in 1922 and confirmed after 1945, continuing a heraldic tradition tied to the region’s medieval past and to Austrian red-and-white symbolism.
