Created by people stationed in Antarctica to represent themselves, the first iteration of the Flag of the True South was made using scraps of canvas tents and field bags. Despite the simple design, it is rich with symbolism: the two colors represent Antarctica's extreme seasons as well as it's position on the globe (the which stripe at the bottom of the world). The upthrust point signifies a mountain or iceberg as they dominate the terrain of the ice-bound continent, but, with its shadow, it forms the needle of a compass pointed south. The color of blue used signifies Antarctica's neutrality, as that specific shade is used on no national flag on Earth. Finally, it mirrors the design of Greenland's flag, which is one of the most northern flags in the world.
