Oman (1954–1959)
#5812
The modern flag of Oman was first raised on 17 December 1970 under Sultan Qabus ibn Said. It replaced earlier plain red and white flags associated with the Sultanate and the Imamate. In 1995, the three horizontal stripes were standardized to equal width, establishing the present design. White has been associated with the Imam and peace, green with the Jabal al-Akhdar or Green Mountains, and red with Oman's historic struggles against foreign invaders, the authority of the Sultanate, and the courage of its people.
Stripe widths and proportions changed
The horizontal stripes became equal in width, and the flag’s proportions changed from 3:4 to 1:2.
Current proportions adopted
A royal decree updated the flag, changing its proportions to 4:7.
