El Salvador’s flag descends from the blue-white-blue banner of the former Federal Republic of Central America, itself inspired by Argentina’s early national colors. A different stars-and-canton design was used from 1865 to 1912, after which the blue-white-blue pattern was restored in 1912. The present form with the national coat of arms was formally adopted in 1916, and current specifications were codified in 1972.
Striped flag adopted
A flag with blue-and-white stripes and a red, star-bearing canton replaced the triband.
