The national flag of Slovakia is a horizontal white, blue, and red tricolor with the Slovak coat of arms positioned near the hoist.
Slovakia’s flag uses the Pan-Slavic colors white, blue, and red. The tricolor developed from earlier Slovak banners and gained the blue stripe during the Slovak Uprising of 1848–49. A plain tricolor was used in Czechoslovakia and also appeared during 1939–45. The current design was adopted on 3 September 1992, when the coat of arms was added to distinguish it from the flag of Russia as Slovakia moved toward independence. The coat of arms features a white double cross associated with Christian heritage and three blue hills traditionally identified as the Tatra, Fatra, and Mátra mountain ranges.
