#0046 · national
The flag of Croatia is a red, white, and blue horizontal tricolor with the Croatian coat of arms centered over the stripes.
Croatia’s flag uses the pan-Slavic red, white, and blue tricolor first adopted by Croatian nationalists during the 1848 revolutions. The current design places the national coat of arms at the center; the red-and-white checkerboard shield is the historic šahovnica, and the five smaller shields above represent the oldest known Croatian coat of arms and the historic regions of Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria, and Slavonia. The present form was finalized by Miroslav Šutej and officially adopted on 25 February 1992.
Croatian tricolour first used
The red-white-blue tricolour was first officially used as a Croatian flag, sometimes with a coat of arms.
Red star added to tricolour
The Socialist Republic of Croatia officially adopted a red-white-blue flag with a yellow-bordered red star in the centre.
Socialist flag officially abandoned
The red-star flag was officially abandoned on 25 June.
