Historic Pennsylvania naval ensign with a dark blue field and a striped canton of thirteen red and white horizontal stripes.
The Pennsylvania Navy Ensign was adopted in 1777 by the Pennsylvania Navy Board during the American Revolutionary War. Its thirteen red and white stripes represented the thirteen original colonies, and the surrounding blue field marked it as a naval ensign flown from Commonwealth vessels. It is an early American flag design used before the later adoption of Pennsylvania's modern blue field state flag with the coat of arms.
