Flag of Hawaii with eight horizontal stripes of white, red, and blue and a Union Jack in the canton.
The flag of Hawaii was officially adopted on May 25, 1845. Its eight horizontal stripes were set to represent the eight main islands: Hawaiʻi, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, and Niʻihau. The Union Jack in the canton reflects early British influence in the islands after Captain George Vancouver presented the Union Flag to King Kamehameha I in 1793. The design was retained through the Kingdom of Hawaii, the Republic of Hawaii, the U.S. Territory, and statehood.
