The flag of Nunavut is vertically divided gold and white, with a red inuksuk centered between the fields and a blue star in the upper fly.
The flag of Nunavut was officially adopted on 1 April 1999, when the territory of Nunavut was established. It was designed by Inuit artist Andrew Qappik of Pangnirtung. The red inuksuk represents traditional stone markers used to guide travelers and mark special or sacred places. The blue star represents Niqirtsuituq, the North Star, symbolizing navigation as well as the wisdom and leadership of elders. Blue and gold symbolize the riches of the land, sea and sky, while red refers to Canada.
