The flag of Rhode Island is a white flag with a gold anchor encircled by thirteen gold stars and a blue ribbon below bearing the word “HOPE.”
Rhode Island adopted its current state flag on November 1, 1897. Its design features a gold anchor and the motto “Hope,” elements rooted in the colonial seal adopted in 1647, with the motto added in 1664. The thirteen stars commemorate the original colonies and Rhode Island’s place as the thirteenth state to ratify the Constitution. The anchor reflects the long-associated symbolism of hope, echoed in the biblical phrase “hope is the anchor of the soul.”
