The flag of North Dakota is a dark blue field charged with a central American eagle, a sunburst and thirteen stars above, and a red scroll reading “NORTH DAKOTA” below.
North Dakota adopted this flag on March 3, 1911, and standardized it in 1943. Its design was modeled on the regimental banner carried by the state’s troops in the Philippine-American War, with modifications associated with Colonel John H. Fraine and the state flag commission. The eagle is derived from the arms of the United States, with thirteen stars and thirteen shield stripes referring to the original colonies. The olive branch and arrows symbolize peace and war, while the sunburst represents the nation’s birth and expanding influence. The added scroll naming the state distinguishes the flag from the national emblem.
