The flag of Connecticut is a royal blue field with a white ornate shield at center bearing three grapevines, above a white scroll inscribed with the Latin motto “Qui Transtulit Sustinet.”
Connecticut adopted its state flag on September 9, 1897. Its central imagery descends from early colonial seals associated with the Saybrook Colony and later Connecticut. The three grapevines came to represent the three original settlements of Windsor, Wethersfield, and Hartford. The motto “Qui transtulit sustinet” means “He who transplanted still sustains.” Oak leaves and acorns on the shield reference the Charter Oak and symbolize endurance and strength.
