The flag of Arizona features thirteen red and gold rays above a dark blue lower half, centered on a large copper-colored star.
The design was created in 1911 by Colonel Charles W. Harris of the Arizona National Guard and was officially adopted on February 27, 1917. The thirteen red and gold rays honor the original thirteen colonies, evoke the setting western sun, and reflect the red-and-yellow banner associated with Spanish explorers in the region. The copper-colored star represents Arizona’s major copper mining industry, while the blue field symbolizes the Colorado River and the sky.
