Horizontal red-white-green tricolor associated with the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, shown with a dark circular hole at the center.
This flag is the Hungarian national tricolor used as a symbol of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Revolutionaries cut out the communist state emblem from the center, creating the famous hole in the flag as an act of defiance and a rejection of Soviet-imposed symbolism. The resulting hole flag became one of the best-known emblems of the uprising and of the restoration of historic Hungarian national identity.
