The flag of Nevada is a cobalt-blue field with a white star in the upper hoist, framed by green sagebrush, a gold scroll reading “BATTLE BORN,” and the state name “NEVADA” below the star.
Nevada’s current flag is the fourth official version in the state’s history. A statewide contest produced the design adopted in 1929, created by Louis Shellback III, featuring a cobalt-blue field, a silver star for the Silver State, sagebrush for the state flower, and the words “Battle Born” commemorating Nevada’s admission during the American Civil War. A legislative wording error affected the placement of the word “Nevada” for decades, and the design was corrected in 1991 so the state name appears below the star.
