Historical flag of Kentucky used from 1918 to 1962, showing the Commonwealth seal on a navy-blue field with gold lettering and goldenrod below.
Kentucky adopted this flag on March 26, 1918. It was later standardized on June 14, 1962, when the state fixed its proportions, colors, and the rendering of the seal. The design, created by Frankfort art teacher Jesse Cox Burgess, features the Commonwealth seal with a pioneer and a statesman clasping hands to symbolize the unity of frontiersmen and legislators, with goldenrod below as the state flower.
