The flag of Idaho is a dark blue field bearing the state seal in the center above a red scroll edged in gold reading “STATE OF IDAHO.”
Idaho’s flag was first adopted on March 12, 1907 as a blue field with the state name. The seal was added on March 15, 1927, and the design was standardized again in March 1957 with a slightly redrawn seal. The Great Seal was originally designed in 1891 by Emma Edwards Green, the only woman to design a U.S. state seal. The seal includes a miner and a woman representing justice, liberty, and equality, surrounding imagery of timber, mountains, a river, wildlife, and agriculture, together with the state motto “Esto perpetua.”
