Historical flag of Louisiana used from 1912 to 2006, showing a pelican feeding three chicks above a ribbon bearing the state motto on a blue field.
Louisiana adopted this state flag on July 1, 1912. It features the pelican in her piety, a long-used Louisiana emblem showing a mother pelican feeding her young, with the motto “Union Justice Confidence” on a ribbon below. The design was used in varying forms for decades, with differences in details such as the number of chicks and blood drops, until a standardized version was codified in 2006 and later officially adopted in 2010.
