History
Illinois adopted this flag on July 6, 1915. It was based on a winning design submitted by Lucy Derwent in a campaign organized by Ella Park Lawrence of the Illinois Daughters of the American Revolution. The flag displayed the Great Seal of Illinois on a white field without the added word “Illinois,” which was introduced by a 1969 amendment and took effect in 1970. The official proportion was 3:5.
