The flag of Louisiana is a blue field bearing a white pelican feeding three chicks in a nest above a white ribbon inscribed with the motto “Union Justice Confidence.”
Louisiana adopted this flag on July 1, 1912. It displays the traditional “pelican in her piety,” a long-standing emblem of the state associated with self-sacrifice and the Pelican State identity. The design was formally standardized in 2006, and in 2010 the flag was corrected to require the three blood droplets on the pelican’s chest. The pelican emblem reflects a symbol used in Louisiana from earlier colonial and post-Civil War eras, and the motto reads “Union Justice Confidence.”
