A dark blue commemorative Illinois flag with a large white letter I at center, a red silhouette of the state inside it, and twenty-one white stars arranged around the emblem.
This sesquicentennial flag was created in 1968 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Illinois being admitted to the Union. The white I and red state silhouette identify Illinois, while the circle of twenty stars represents the states admitted before Illinois and the larger twenty-first star highlights Illinois as the twenty-first state. It was used during sesquicentennial celebrations and later became a notable reference point in discussions of Illinois flag redesign.
