Historical flag of Arkansas used in 1923, featuring a red field with a large white diamond bordered in blue, 25 white border stars, the name ARKANSAS in blue, and four blue stars arranged two above and two below the name.
Arkansas adopted its first state flag on February 26, 1913, from a design by Willie K. Hocker. In 1923 a fourth star was added to the central group, creating the distinctive 1923 version with two stars above and two below the state name. The white diamond refers to Arkansas's diamond-producing heritage, the 25 white stars mark Arkansas as the 25th state, and the original three central stars represented the sovereign powers that had ruled the territory and Arkansas's place as the third state formed from the Louisiana Purchase. The fourth star added in 1923 honored Arkansas's brief membership in the Confederate States of America. In 1924 the arrangement was revised to one star above and three below the name.
